GILLIGAN’S ISLAND: THE MUSICAL
CHAPEL OFF CHAPEL
FEB 15-MAR 4 2018
BOOK BY SHERWOOD SCHWARTZ AND LLOYD J SCHWARTZ
WORDS & MUSIC BY HOPE AND LAURENCE JUBER
BASED ON THE TV SHOW “GILLIGAN’S ISLAND” CREATED BY SHERWOOD SCHWARTZ
Shipwrecked on a remote Pacific island, the seven castaways build huts and begin to explore their surroundings. They discover strange hieroglyphics in a spooky cave, which speak of an ancient legend.
The weather gets rough, Gilligan foils the best-laid of the castaway’s rescue plans… romance develops… The castaways have an out-of-this-world encounter… It’s fun, wacky and entertaining with 18 original, tuneful and memorable songs.
Gilligan’s Island: The Musical is a family-friendly stage musical version of the ever-popular and iconic 60‘s TV comedy show “Gilligan’s Island”, which has aired continuously since 1964 and is one of the rare TV properties to rate equally well in every demographic group.
Written by Sherwood Schwartz in the 80s, this Victorian theatrical premiere is absurd, funny, nostalgic and being innovatively brought into the 21st century.
The cast consists of the seven castaways: “Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire and his wife, the Movie Star, the Professor and Mary Ann”. There are also two swing roles that will cover additional character roles and are discretionary in gender and vocal range.
We encourage all performers who feel they meet the role requirements to audition. We practise colour blind casting, and specific roles will be open to being considered as gender diverse roles – in which both male and female artists will be considered to play the role.
SKIPPER / CAPTAIN JONAS GRUMBY:
The Captain of the S.S. Minnow
Loveable but consistently irritated by Gilligan’s Incompetence. Quick to take charge and take command of any situation. High level of physical comedy required.
Baritone. Range can be worked with however, as this is a gender diverse role
MR THURSTON HOWELL III:
Head of Howell Industries. Eternally money conscious. Always manages to disappear when there’s work to be done. The elite of the top 1% – but a big child at heart, always sleeping with his precious teddy, nightgown and cap.
MRS EUNICE ‘LOVEY’ WENTWORTH HOWELL:
The Millionaire’s Wife.
Used to being in a life of luxury, “Lovey” is always proper and poised. She is less concerned about money than her husband. She is sweet, gracious and a wannabe matchmaker.
The Movie Star.
Glamorous, alluring, sexy, flirtacious and seductive. Is more than what meets the eye.
PROFESSOR ROY HINKLEY, Ph. D:
Formally titled as “Professor Roy Hinkley Jr., M.A., B.S., Ph. D.”. A science professor at a highschool, the Professor has become the island’s resident genius. Very smart, kind, sensible, and rarely gets frightened. Grounded in reality and the logical. Able to invent many MANY ridiculous things out of nothing, MacGyver style.
Baritone or tenor with some low end. Range can be worked with however, as this is a gender diverse role
MARY ANN SUMMERS:
Simple farm girl from Kansas.
A bit of a tomboy, the spirit of innocence. Mary Ann is down to earth, perky, nice and upbeat. Genuinely sweet, loveable and sensitive.
This role must be able to cover all male roles as well as alternate the several minor characters in the show. Each swing will have one guaranteed performance in a leading role.
